SRX REVERSE INSTALL SUPPLEMENT

 

 

The SRX has no official reverse option, so I filtered through all the Yamaha forums to get a consensus on the best kit for the job. I decided on a MViper kit which requires that I replace my top gear and chain from a 15W to HYVO which the Viper kit uses, ...SRX from 00' to 02' use the HYVO gearbox.

 

There is no easy way to install reverse on a stock SRX without modifications.

This procedure is for an SRX with a stock silencer.

 

A). First drain coolant then remove pipes, silencer, coolant tank, brake scoop, drain gearbox and remove cover.

 

B). Remove flanges from Viper gear case cover to clear stock silencer (used reciprocating saw and grinder).

 

 

 

 

 

C). Discard coolant tank lower mounting bracket to air box and cut away tank mounting block from air box to allow coolant tank to clear reverse linkage (used grinder).

 

 

 

 

D). Discard short coolant hose from rear of coolant tank and replace with a longer hose raising the coolant tank to help clear reverse linkage (approx. 2" longer).

 

 

 

E). Fasten coolant tank using high quality metal tab tie wraps and install brake air scoop, I wrapped the lower tank to the oil tank and routed the upper tank tie wrap through a drilled hole at the top of the air box (you may want to add duct tape between tank and air box to eliminate chaffing).

 

 

 

F). Before moving to the next step, you will need a new HYVO 3/4 top gear and a HYVO 3/4 chain to mate with the new HYVO 39T gear provided with the kit. (This kit will not work with the stock 15W gear and chain on 98' & 99' SRX's, ...00' and above use HYVO components).

 

 

 

 

G). Follow "Pro Action reverse installation" from totallyamaha.com tech section (pretty much identical to the Viper install).

 

 

H). Enlarge silencer mounting hole slightly allowing mounting bolt to fit (this is a squeaker but works fine and clears the silencer, ...just).

 

 

 

I). Reinstall exhaust, top up gearbox with 75W synthetic gear oil, top up coolant and bleed cooling system (see TY tech pages on coolant bleeding).

 

 

Took the MSRX for a test run and I’m hooked, no more back strain, …word of caution this thing goes like stink backwards as well!
